Mequon-Thiensville School District Takes Proactive Approach to IAQ

The Mequon-Thiensville School District in Wisconsin has taken a hands-on approach to improving indoor air quality (IAQ) throughout the district’s classrooms and administrative buildings. In addition to improving the schools’ IAQ, the program will increase energy efficiency, reducing respiratory and skin infections, and lower maintenance costs throughout the district.

Kyle Thompson, the Director of Buildings and Grounds for the Mequon-Thiensville School District reported, “The school district is committed to providing the best environment possible for learning to take place. Our goal is to provide a safe, clean, comfortable, functional and attractive environment for the community. We are trusted to ensure that taxpayer funds are used efficiently while providing a good return on each investment. By utilizing proven technologies as part of the district’s measures to ensure a safe environment for both students and faculty we can improve IAQ, reduce absenteeism, increase HVAC energy efficiency, minimize maintenance costs and extend service life of the district’s equipment. New ASHRAE Handbook Features Chapter on Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recently released the 2011 ASHRAE Handbook – HVAC Applications. This important reference book has over 60 chapters addressing a broad range of HVAC applications, including the latest technologies available for HVAC&R engineers.

The 2011 edition includes a new chapter titled “Ultraviolet Air and Surface Treatment” that has received much attention in the HVAC&R community. The chapter covers topics from HVAC system surface treatments to studies on airstream disinfection and room surface treatments. Dave Witham, UltraViolet Devices’ (UVDI) Vice President of Technology, was an instrumental team member in developing this important chapter.

The new chapter provides ASHRAE guidance for recommended levels of UV intensity appropriate for surface disinfection applications. According to the handbook, “UVGI can be applied to HVAC systems to complement conventional system maintenance procedures.” It goes on to discuss the benefits of low UV-C irradiance applied to cooling coils and drain pans resulting in a highly cost effective method of preventing mold and bacteria growth on system components.

New OSHA Document Addresses IAQ in Commercial and Institutional Buildings

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently released “Indoor Air Quality in Commercial and Institutional Buildings”. The document provides practical guidance for IAQ issues meant to assist building owners and operators. In addition, it offers direction for HVAC engineers, industrial hygienists and IAQ professionals to improve the indoor environment.

The OSHA document states, “Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a major concern to businesses, schools, building managers, tenants, and workers because it can impact the health, comfort, well-being, and productivity of the building occupants. OSHA recognizes that poor IAQ can be hazardous to workers’ health and that it is in the best interest of everyone that building owners, managers, and employers take a proactive approach to address IAQ concerns.”

Germantown School District Tackles Energy Efficiency & IAQ

Thousands of students, parents and faculty in Germantown, Wisconsin have a new reason to look forward to summer break. Recently, the Germantown School District decided to implement a series of upgrades to their HVAC systems in the district’s buildings that will begin shortly.

The district is working with Filtration Concepts to install a series of cutting edge ultraviolet (UV) technologies developed and manufactured by UltraViolet Devices, Inc. (UVDI). Twenty-eight air handlers are being outfitted with ultraviolet germicidal irradiation products that include the V-MOD, V-RAY and V-STRIKE systems from UVDI. The systems will disinfect mold, bacteria and viruses growing on HVAC system surfaces and cooling coils resulting in improved IAQ while reducing energy consumption and maintenance costs.

Don Erickson, the Director of Building and Grounds at Germantown, commented on the selection of Filtration Concepts proposal, “The UVDI products were selected for the proper application of the existing equipment. The decision for the district to proceed with the project was based on energy savings. This was an easy decision with a projected return on investment of less than 3 years. Along with the energy savings, improved indoor air quality will reduce absenteeism.”

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has long been a proponent of improving indoor air quality in the nation’s schools. The EPA’s website states that, “Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) can cause illness requiring absence from school, and can cause acute health symptoms that decrease performance while at school. In addition, recent data suggest that poor IAQ can reduce a person’s ability to perform specific mental tasks requiring concentration, calculation, or memory.”

IAQA Pensacola Chapter to Host UV-C Specialist

 

The power of ultraviolet (UV) technologies for tackling indoor air quality (IAQ) issues will be presented at an upcoming IAQA workshop in Pensacola on June 10th.

Ross Shoemaker, the Southeast Regional Sales Manager for UltraViolet Devices, Inc. (UVDI) will present to the Pensacola, Florida Chapter of the Indoor Air Quality Association (IAQA) at the next upcoming workshop.

The presentation will take place on June 10th at the Pensacola Civic Center beginning at 8:00 am. Mr. Shoemaker will be discussing the power of UV for improving indoor air quality, surface disinfection, increased energy efficiency of HVAC systems and preventing various microbial pathogens from causing illness in indoor environments.

Mr. Shoemaker joined UVDI earlier this year and is responsible for managing customer relationships and business development across the entire Southeastern United States. Mr. Shoemaker has over 28 years of business experience in sales and management in the HVAC and indoor air quality markets, including over 20 years at Trane. He received his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
